How to reverse CS2 trades?

Scams happen, even to experienced traders. One of the most common types we see involves API scams or hijacked accounts, where someone gains control of your Steam account through the Steam API key and quickly transfers your valuable items away. You can read more about different types of scams here: How to Never Get Scammed in CS2

If this happens to you, it is not necessarily game over. Steam has introduced Trade Protection for certain games like Counter-Strike 2, which allows you to reverse trades within 7 days after the trade has been accepted. Here is everything you need to know about the trade reversal feature.

What Is Steam Trade Protection?

Steam’s Trade Protection feature acts as a safety net for players. Whenever you receive a CS2 item from a trade, that item becomes “trade protected” for seven days. During that time, it cannot be consumed, modified, or traded again. This gives you a chance to reverse a scam if you discover that your account was compromised.

At the moment, only Counter-Strike 2 items are covered by Trade Protection.

Valve has stated that this system might expand to other games in the future, but for now, it is limited to CS2.

When Should You Reverse a Trade?

You should only use the trade reversal feature if:

  • Your account was compromised through phishing, malware, or a password leak

  • You accidentally approved a malicious trade, such as through an API scam

  • You notice suspicious trades in your trade history that you did not make

Using the trade reversal feature will reverse ALL CS2 trades within the last 7 days. Returning the skins and placing an automated 30-day trade ban on your Steam account.

What Happens After a Reversal

When you reverse trades, several things happen:

  • You will be signed out of your Steam sessions, meaning you will be required to log in to your Steam account again.

  • The items you traded away within the last 7 days are returned to their previous owners, including your stolen items coming back to you. If any of your items are returned to Skinport Bots, those items will show up within your Skinport Inventory within the next 24 hours.

  • Your account is trade-locked for 30 days, meaning you cannot trade or use the Steam Community Market during this time

Protect Yourself From Future Scams

As a secure marketplace, we encourage users to be proactive about security. Here are our top tips:

  • Always use Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator to add an extra layer of protection

  • Revoke your Steam API key if you suspect it has been compromised. You can do this on Steam’s API key management page here. If you see an API key, it is safe to revoke it. You are not required to have an active API key while using Skinport.

  • Consider using Skinport for all of your purchases and sales of Skins. All Skinport bots are safe & only tradeable items can be listed on the market, meaning all sales and purchases are final and can not be reversed.

  • Stop using P2P websites, as all trades can be reversed within 7 days.

Final Thoughts

Steam’s Trade Protection is a powerful tool that can save you if you act quickly. It only works if you notice the scam within 7 days and if the affected items are trade-protected.

From our perspective as a marketplace, we strongly encourage traders to regularly check their trade history and enable every possible security measure to avoid falling victim in the first place. Prevention is always the top priority.
